I might feel the same way if it were not for my iPhone shutting off as soon as temps drop anywhere close to freezing.

May seem overkill to bring both, but my phone is also my still and movie camera, GPS and GPS back up (Gaia), first aid manual, star finder, and very occasionally movie theatre a new off trail route, I just turn on both, then look only at the phone's screen periodically (and it's not a huge power drain, I can still go a few days without a charge). If I'm checking the GPS function frequently, e.g. I pair mine (super easy) with my phone and get a way bigger screen and full keyboard for evening messages to my wife. I've been surprised sometimes at how narrow a canyon can be and still it sends out a signal relatively fast. I have the older model Delorme Explorer, it is a trusted and reliable tool, esp when I'm in remote areas alone.
